What it is:
Uncomfortably taut, tight skin. Existing lines can be amplified on dry, dehydrated skin. There may be a loss of plumpness—skin lacks luster, looks and feels rough rather than smooth, and may be itchy, flaky.
Why it happens:
Lack of adequate oil and water production at skin’s surface—often combined with a breakdown of the moisture barrier—can cause skin to lose water and become dehydrated. Dry skin can be caused by:
Genes. Some people inherit dry, delicate skin with fine pores. Most serious dry skin conditions are genetic, too.
Climate. The colder air is, the less moisture it holds. When winter air gets heated, it soaks up moisture wherever it can find some—including your skin.
Sun. Those rays may feel good, but every minute they touch skin they strip it of essential moisture, not to mention its youth.
Aging. With slower cell turnover and dead cells clumping together, moisture has a tough time getting into skin. A decrease in oil and sweat glands reduce skin’s plumpness. Thin skin and its sluggish circulation diminish the ability to bring water to skin’s surface.
Thin skin. Skin around the eyes and lips has few oil glands to keep it hydrated.
How to treat it:
Replenish the natural oil and water balance at the surface and help improve the moisture barrier. Use a moisturizer for your skin type twice daily as part of your AM and PM skin care regimen. Skin will feel more comfortable, look smoother. Clinique’s famous golden moisturizer, Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion or Gel, gives every skin the moisture “drink” it needs. We also have a full range of moisture specialists for all skin types and concerns. On a plane, in a dry climate or just need a moisture boost? Soften and soothe in a flash with Moisture Surge favourites. Eye cream is a must—everyone needs one.
To help keep skin soft and smooth, treat it gently. Avoid:
• Using hot water on your face—it strips skin of natural oils.
• Harsh soaps and skin care with fragrance. Everything Clinique is allergy tested and 100% fragrance free.
• Scrubbing your face with a washcloth. It may irritate very dry skin. Gently apply and splash away cleansers with your hands, blot dry with a soft towel.
• Over-moisturizing. It can clog pores, leading to breakouts. Use a moisturizer for your skin type. Not sure of your skin type? Go to My Skin Consultation now.
