About Men's 3-Step
Men's great-skin secret.
It's said that men's skin ages later than women's. Shaving is most likely part of the reason. All that exfoliation helps keep skin in top form, leaving it softer, smoother—and younger-looking to boot. Exfoliation happens naturally every day as skin sheds dead skin cells. But nature does it slowly, unevenly. Our guiding dermatologists recommend a twice-daily sweep with Scruffing Lotion on unshaved areas of skin to keep up with the build-up of flakes. Regular exfoliation speeds up and evens out skin's natural renewal process, bringing new skin to the surface faster .

Your basic skin care routine should be as simple as brushing your teeth. Clinique's 3-Step Skin Care System of clean, exfoliate, moisturize will help keep your skin in peak condition without a lot of heavy lifting. And there's a bonus for guys: better shaves. Men find they get closer shaves and fewer ingrown hairs when they cleanse and exfoliate daily.

Men's Skin 101

Is there a difference between men's and women's skin?
Definitely. Male hormones have a very pronounced effect on skin. They stimulate oil and sweat glands, and make skin stronger by enlarging the middle layer—the dermis—with collagen. Men's skin tends to be thicker and oilier throughout their lives, since their hormone levels remain fairly high.

Why do men age gracefully?
Superficially speaking, men's skins are stronger, so they can resist signs of aging longer. Beards and whiskers also tend to hide what might be so apparent on a woman's face. Daily shaving is another key factor—shaving exfoliates skin, leaving it softer, smoother and younger-looking to boot.

In women, oil production declines fairly dramatically around menopause, when there's a significant drop in the male hormones that stimulate women's oil glands. Men produce a high level of male hormones well into advanced age, so their skin tends to be more lubricated throughout most of their lives.

If men have stronger and thicker skin than women, do they still need to have the same skin care routine?
In general, men are more casual with sun exposure, so they may see more damage, such as dark spots on the face and body, discolouration, broken blood vessels, and lines and wrinkles. Fact: men have a high incidence of skin cancer on their ears because they wear caps but no sunscreen.

Are there differences between men and women's skin care needs?
The basic concept of Clinique's 3-Step Skin Care System—cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing twice a day—is just as important for men as for women. In fact, most men will find that their shaving routine greatly improves when they start cleansing and exfoliating on a regular basis, since exfoliation helps reduce ingrown facial hairs. The difference between the men's and women's 3-Step is the strength of the formulas. Since men's skin tends to be more oil-rich, our men's formulas are “stepped up” accordingly. Also, for men, exfoliation focuses on unshaved areas of the skin.

Do lifestyle choices affect the way men's skin ages?
The skin is a mirror of our lifestyle choices. If you're dehydrated, skin will appear more wrinkled and lose some elasticity. If you're constantly stressed out and sleep-deprived, skin will look dull and lifeless. If you smoke, you're prematurely damaging blood vessels and limiting skin's ability to self-repair. If you're a sun worshipper, you're accelerating visible signs of aging. The bottom line: To keep your skin looking healthy and radiant, eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, get a good night's sleep, and avoid smoking and unprotected sun exposure. Your skin will not only appear smoother, clearer—you'll look younger, too.
