How to Reduce Dark Circles

Dr. Pompas on how they can use Clinique products to conceal and treat dark circles and make eyes stand out.

Dark circles don't always pop up just under the eyes—many struggle with darkness on their lids as well. And no matter how many hours of sleep you get, sometimes those pesky dark circles still show up. “Sun damage, lack of sleep, and dehydration can all trigger dark circles for anyone,” explains board-certified dermatologist and Miami-based Clinique Derm Pro Dr. Adriane Pompa. Here are three tips to brighter-looking eyes:

#1: Brighten the darkness.

Start by applying All About Eyes, a lightweight, oil-free eye cream with caffeine that helps diminish the appearance of puffiness and eye circles. “Optical diffusers scatter light to soften the appearance of darkness. Use your ring finger to apply—it has the lightest touch—so you won’t irritate the sensitive skin around your eyes,” explains Dr. Pompa.

#2: Neutralize darkness.

Next, use an apricot-colored corrector to neutralize the blue-ish undertones and dark shadows, like Beyond Perfecting Super Concealer Camouflage + 24-Hour Wear Apricot Corrector. “This formula delivers all-day, transfer-resistant coverage—even through sweat and humidity. It’s a really great option for anyone who lives in a humid climate, like myself,” says Dr. Pompa. “Then you’ll want to use a skin tone-matching shade of Beyond Perfecting Super Concealer Camouflage + 24-Hour Wear for a smooth finish.”

#3: Create a lifted appearance.

“On a personal note, I always use a smudge resistant mascara formula because when my mascara runs at the end of the day, it makes dark circles look more obvious,” Pompa says. Her pick: High Impact Lash Elevating Mascara because it lengthens and lifts your lashes, which can help make your eyes look more awake. Plus, it’s ophthalmologist tested, so it won’t cause irritation.
